Everything in ITIL starts with value. Value is not what the provider says it delivers. It is what the people receiving it feel they gain. That's why ITIL talks about value co-creation: providers and consumers create value together.

Outputs, outcomes and valueOutput, outcome, dan value

Outputs enable outcomes, and outcomes create value. Example: a new mobile app leads to customers paying bills on time, which means more revenue and happier customers. Output A bill-paymentfeature is released Outcome Customers payon time, in seconds Value Steady cash flow, happier customers Measure as far to the right as you can.
An output is what you produce. An outcome is what it makes possible. Value is what stakeholders gain from it.Output adalah apa yang Anda hasilkan. Outcome adalah apa yang dimungkinkannya. Value adalah apa yang diperoleh stakeholder.

Value always has two sides. A service can bring benefits and also remove or add costs and risks for the consumer. A cloud email service removes the cost of running mail servers, but adds a new risk: depending on an internet connection.

Value selalu punya dua sisi.

Utility and warrantyUtility dan warranty

A product or service creates value only when it has both:

Product atau service hanya menghasilkan value jika memiliki keduanya:

  • Utility: fit for purpose. Does it do what people need? A video meeting tool that can share screens.
  • Warranty: fit for use. Does it work reliably enough? The same tool must be available during office hours, secure, and able to host 200 people.
  • Utility: fit for purpose.
  • Warranty: fit for use. Apakah ia bekerja cukup andal?

Products and servicesProduct dan service

ITIL 5 puts products and services side by side. A product is what the organization builds and owns, such as a mobile banking app. A service is how consumers get value from it without managing the costs and risks themselves. The bank offers the app to millions of customers as a service, together with support, security and updates.

A service offering packages this for a target group, for example "Premium banking: app access, priority hotline and a personal advisor". The ongoing cooperation between provider and consumer is the service relationship.

Who is the consumer?Siapa konsumennya?

"The consumer" is often three different people. Knowing who is who helps you understand whose idea of value you are serving.

Key ideaInti materiAsk "what does this make possible for them?", not "what did we deliver?". Value lives in the consumer's outcomes, and it is shaped by costs and risks as well as benefits.
Real-world example: an e-commerce checkoutContoh kasus: checkout e-commerce3 min3 menit

An online store's IT team celebrates: the new checkout page was released on time (an output). Two weeks later, sales are down. The page looks great but is slow on mobile networks, so customers give up (poor warranty).

Tim TI sebuah toko online merayakan rilis halaman checkout baru yang tepat waktu (sebuah output). Dua minggu kemudian, penjualan turun. Halamannya terlihat bagus tetapi lambat di jaringan seluler, sehingga pelanggan menyerah (warranty yang buruk).

The team changes what it measures, from "features released" to "checkouts completed per visit" (an outcome). After the page is made faster, completed checkouts rise by 12%. That gain in revenue is the value the business actually wanted.

  • Common mistake: reporting only outputs (tickets closed, servers patched). Add at least one outcome metric per service.
  • Ask your customers one question: "What would be different for you if this worked perfectly?" Their answer describes value.
  • In a small team, write a one-line value statement for each service you run. It makes priorities much easier.
  • Kesalahan umum: hanya melaporkan output (tiket ditutup, server di-patch).
